The W221 S-Class refined everything the W220 started while addressing many of its reliability concerns. It introduced LED daytime running lights, night vision assist, and a significantly improved Airmatic system. The S63 AMG with the hand-built M157 biturbo V8 and S65 AMG with the M275 V12 biturbo offered staggering performance from a full-size luxury sedan.
The W222 S-Class was a landmark in automotive technology, debuting Magic Body Control with road-scanning cameras, a fully digital instrument cluster, and Burmester 3D surround sound. It set the standard for luxury sedans with technology that competitors took years to match. The S63 and S65 AMG variants delivered supercar performance wrapped in supreme comfort.
The W113 SL, affectionately known as the "Pagoda" for its distinctive concave hardtop roofline, is one of the most elegant sports cars ever designed. The SL500 with the M119 V8 and later M113 V8 offered effortless performance, while the SL600 with the M120 V12 was the ultimate grand tourer. The R230 SL introduced the folding metal hardtop (Vario Roof), eliminating the need for a separate soft and hard top. The W163 ML-Class was Mercedes-Benz's first SUV, built at their then-new Alabama factory. It debuted famously in the film Jurassic Park: The Lost World before its official launch. While early models suffered from quality issues related to the new factory, the 2002+ facelift models showed significant improvement. The ML55 AMG with 342 hp was the original Mercedes performance SUV.
The W164 ML-Class was a ground-up redesign that addressed virtually every criticism of the W163. Built on an all-new platform shared with the GL-Class (X164), it offered Airmatic air suspension, a significantly improved interior, and the option of a 4ETS traction control system or a full-time 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system. The W166 generation began life as the ML-Class before being renamed GLE-Class in the 2016 facelift as part of Mercedes' naming rationalization. It offered a wide range of powertrains including diesel, V6 biturbo, V8 biturbo, and a plug-in hybrid. The GLE63 AMG S with 577 hp was one of the fastest SUVs available. The Coupe variant (C292) competed directly with the BMW X6.
The W463 G-Class (Gelaendewagen) is the longest-running Mercedes-Benz model, originally designed as a military vehicle in 1979. The civilian W463 has evolved from a utilitarian off-roader to a luxury status symbol while retaining its three locking differentials and body-on-frame construction. The 2019 redesign modernized the platform significantly while maintaining the iconic silhouette. The G63 AMG has become one of the most recognizable vehicles in the world.
The X164 GL-Class was Mercedes-Benz's answer to the full-size luxury SUV segment, offering three rows of seating with genuine space for seven adults. Built on the same platform as the W164 ML-Class but stretched, it featured standard Airmatic suspension, 4MATIC all-wheel drive, and a choice of V6, V8, and diesel engines. The X166 continued as the GL-Class before being renamed GLS-Class in 2017 as part of Mercedes' global naming strategy. The W204 C63 AMG is powered by the naturally aspirated M156 6.2L V8, a hand-built engine producing 451 hp (481 hp in the Edition 507). The W123 is arguably the most durable automobile Mercedes-Benz has ever produced. Sold in sedan, coupe, and estate (T-model) variants, it became the backbone of taxi fleets worldwide and earned a near-mythical reputation for longevity. The diesel models — especially the turbocharged 300TD wagon — are deeply beloved by enthusiasts. More W123s have crossed the one-million-kilometer mark than perhaps any other car.
The W126 S-Class is widely regarded as the finest luxury sedan of its era and one of the best Mercedes-Benz models ever produced. Its combination of engineering excellence, build quality, aerodynamic efficiency, and understated elegance set a standard that arguably has not been surpassed. The 560SEL remains the definitive 1980s luxury car, and values have been climbing steadily as collectors recognize its significance.
The original G-Wagen was developed jointly with Steyr-Daimler-Puch as a military and utility vehicle, but its combination of rugged off-road capability and Mercedes-Benz engineering quality quickly earned it a devoted civilian following. The W460 and W461 feature three locking differentials, a ladder frame, and solid axles front and rear — true off-road hardware wrapped in a package that is surprisingly comfortable on-road. The R129 SL was a quantum leap over its R107 predecessor, featuring an automatic roll bar, sophisticated multi-link suspension, and optional V12 power.
