Clutch Replacement

Fewer Mercedes come with three pedals every year, which is exactly why we still make sure we can look after the ones that do.

Typical range: $1,200 – $3,400

Signs you need this

  • Clutch slipping under load, particularly in higher gears
  • Judder as the clutch engages from a standstill
  • Rattle at idle that disappears when the pedal is pressed
  • Pedal going soft or falling to the floor

How we approach it

We replace clutch kits, dual-mass flywheels, concentric slave cylinders and pilot bearings on manual Mercedes from 190E and W124 through to modern C-Class and SLK models. A worn dual-mass flywheel is the part most commonly skipped to save money, and the part most likely to bring the car straight back with a rattle at idle. We measure it rather than guess, and we resurface or replace as the measurement dictates.

What the job includes

  • 01Clutch, pressure plate and release bearing replacement
  • 02Dual-mass flywheel measurement, resurfacing or replacement
  • 03Concentric slave and master cylinder replacement
  • 04Pilot bearing, spigot and input shaft seal inspection
  • 05Gearbox and bell housing reseal where accessible
  • 06Hydraulic bleed and biting-point road test

Common questions

Do I have to replace the flywheel too?

Only if it measures out of specification, which we check with the gearbox out. A dual-mass flywheel with excessive rotational play will rattle and destroy a new clutch, so when it is worn we say so.

How long does a Mercedes clutch last?

Anywhere from 60,000 to over 150,000 miles depending entirely on how it has been driven. Traffic and hill starts are what wear them, not mileage alone.
