Classic Mercedes Restoration
From W113 Pagodas to R107 SLs, W126 S-Classes to the legendary W124 — we maintain and restore the icons. Mechanical fuel injection, vacuum-operated climate and locking systems, analog electronics, and chrome-era craftsmanship are our heritage. We have been caring for these cars since they were new.
What goes wrong
Classic Mercedes-Benz vehicles (pre-1995) are engineering marvels built to last decades, but they require specialized knowledge that is rapidly disappearing from the repair industry. Mechanical fuel injection systems — Bosch K-Jetronic (CIS) and KE-Jetronic (CIS-E) — are complex hydro-mechanical systems with warm-up regulators, fuel distributors, and mixture adjustments that cannot be diagnosed with a scan tool. They require an intimate understanding of fuel pressures, control pressures, and the interaction between the fuel distributor plunger and the air sensor plate. Vacuum-operated central locking and climate control systems use dozens of vacuum actuators, check valves, and lines that become brittle and crack with age, causing locks that won't work, climate flaps that default to defrost, and idle quality issues from vacuum leaks. The M103, M104, M110, and M130 engines use timing chains that stretch over high mileage, and the single-row chain in the M104 is a known failure point. Electrical systems in these cars use analog electronics — relay-based control, resistor boards, and simple transistor circuits — that modern technicians trained on CAN-bus computers simply do not understand. Finding a mechanic who can set the timing on a mechanical fuel injection system, adjust a Bosch ignition distributor, or troubleshoot a W126 climate control vacuum pod is increasingly difficult.
How we fix it
Beach Benz has been servicing classic Mercedes-Benz vehicles since 1990 — many of these cars have been in our care since they were near-new. Our technicians understand mechanical fuel injection at a component level. We rebuild K-Jetronic fuel distributors, replace warm-up regulators, set control pressures with a gauge, and adjust the air-fuel mixture by feel and by exhaust gas analysis. We rebuild vacuum systems from scratch using new silicone vacuum lines, OEM check valves, and rebuilt actuators. We carry NOS (new old stock) and high-quality reproduction parts for models that Mercedes no longer supports. For engine work, we perform timing chain replacement on M103, M104, and M110 engines with updated tensioner kits. We rebuild M116/M117 V8 engines, reseal M103/M104 inline-sixes, and address the common head gasket failures on the M110. Electrical restoration includes rebuilding instrument clusters, replacing aged capacitors on relay boards, and restoring antenna mast motors. We source parts through our network of classic Mercedes vendors, including Mercedes-Benz Classic Center, Beckley Imports, Pelican Parts, and specialty European suppliers.

Common questions
Can you still get parts for my classic Mercedes?
Yes. Mercedes-Benz is better than almost any manufacturer at supporting their heritage vehicles. The Mercedes-Benz Classic Center in Irvine, CA stocks thousands of parts for models going back to the 1950s. We also source from Beckley Imports, Pelican Parts, AutohausAZ, and European specialty vendors. For truly rare items, we have a network of NOS (new old stock) part sources and can source quality reproduction components.
My R107 runs rough when cold — what is wrong?
On K-Jetronic (CIS) equipped R107s, rough cold running is almost always related to the warm-up regulator (also called the control pressure regulator). This device enriches the mixture during cold start by lowering the control pressure on the fuel distributor. When it fails, the engine runs lean when cold, causing rough idle, stumbling, and hard starting. We test control pressure with a gauge and replace the warm-up regulator if out of specification. Other causes include a leaking cold-start injector, worn injector seals, or a vacuum leak.
How often should a classic Mercedes be serviced?
Classic Mercedes-Benz vehicles benefit from more frequent service intervals than modern cars. We recommend an oil and filter change every 3,000 to 5,000 miles with conventional or high-quality synthetic oil, valve adjustment every 15,000 miles (especially on M110 and M130 engines), and a comprehensive annual inspection that includes brake fluid flush, cooling system check, suspension inspection, and a vacuum system test. Regular maintenance is the key to keeping these cars reliable for decades.
Do you work on diesel classics like the W123 240D or W126 300SD?
Absolutely. The Mercedes diesel engines — OM615, OM616, OM617, OM602, OM603 — are legendarily durable, but they still need proper care. We service and rebuild diesel injection pumps, replace glow plugs and glow plug relays, adjust valve lash, replace timing chains, and address the common vacuum pump failures. We are especially experienced with the OM617 turbodiesel, which requires careful attention to boost control and turbo oil feed line maintenance.
Can you do a full restoration on my classic Mercedes?
We focus on mechanical restoration — engine, transmission, suspension, brakes, electrical, and fuel systems. We do not do body and paint work in-house, but we have trusted partners for collision repair, paint, chrome restoration, and upholstery. We are happy to project-manage a full restoration, coordinating the mechanical and cosmetic work so you have a single point of contact.
