Cooling System & Overheating
Mercedes cooling systems are plastic where they need to be light and pressurised where they need to be efficient. Age finds every seam.
Signs you need this
- Temperature gauge climbing above normal in traffic
- Coolant loss with no obvious puddle
- Heater blowing cold at idle
- Sweet smell or steam from under the hood
How we approach it
Expansion tanks crack at the seam, thermostat housings warp, radiators split at the plastic end tanks, and the electric auxiliary water pumps fail silently until the heater goes cold. We pressure test the system cold and hot, check the fan clutch or electric fan control, verify thermostat opening temperature with live data, and fill with the correct MB-approved coolant — never the universal green from a parts store, which corrodes aluminium components in these engines.

Common questions
Can I just top it up and keep driving?
For a few days maybe, but an aluminium Mercedes engine does not survive a real overheat. A warped head costs twenty times what the leak repair does.
Does the coolant type matter that much?
Yes. Mercedes specifies a particular silicate-free formulation. Mixing in generic coolant produces gel that blocks the heater core and radiator.
