Convertible & Vario Roof Repair

A Vario roof stuck halfway is a bad afternoon. It is also, more often than not, one microswitch or one weeping cylinder.

Call (714) 842-9816Directions & hours

Typical range: $450 – $4,500

Signs you need this

  • Roof stops partway through its cycle and will not continue
  • Hydraulic fluid stains on the trunk carpet or rear seat
  • Roof operates slowly or with unusual noise
  • Warning message about the roof or trunk separation panel

How we approach it

We work on R129, R170, R171, R230, R231 and CLK convertible roofs regularly. The usual culprits are hydraulic cylinders that leak onto the trunk carpet, a pump that has lost pressure, and the microswitches that tell the control module a panel has latched. Because the sequence is interlocked, one bad switch stops everything. We read the roof module directly to see which step it is stuck on, rather than dismantling the mechanism to find out.

What the job includes

  • 01Roof control module fault and step-sequence readout
  • 02Hydraulic cylinder replacement and system bleed
  • 03Pump testing, replacement and fluid service
  • 04Microswitch and latch sensor replacement
  • 05Soft top fabric, rear window and seal replacement
  • 06Full cycle testing and manual emergency operation check

Common questions

My roof is stuck halfway right now — can I drive it in?

Most of these roofs have a manual emergency closing procedure. Call us and we will talk you through it for your model, or arrange a tow if the mechanism is jammed.

Do you replace soft tops as well as repair mechanisms?

Yes — fabric, rear glass and seals, fitted properly so the roof still stacks correctly. A badly fitted top is what tears the next one.

Let us take a look at it.

Call and describe what the car is doing. We will give you an honest assessment before any work begins.
