Check Engine Light Diagnosis
A generic code reader tells you a code exists. Xentry tells us what the engine was doing when it set, what the sensor was reading, and which of five possible causes actually fits your car.
Signs you need this
- Check engine light on, flashing, or coming and going
- Rough idle, hesitation, or a noticeable loss of power
- Failed smog test or a "not ready" emissions monitor
- Another shop replaced a part and the light came back
How we approach it
The most expensive words in Mercedes repair are "the code said to replace it." A P0171 lean code can come from an intake leak, a failing MAF, a soft camshaft adjuster, a stretched timing chain, or a cracked crankcase breather — and only one of those is your car. We pull freeze-frame data, live fuel trims, adaptation values and actuator tests through factory Xentry, then confirm the diagnosis mechanically before we quote a repair. You get a written explanation of what is wrong and what it costs.
What the job includes
- 01Full-system scan of every control unit, not just the engine ECU
- 02Freeze-frame and live data review with Mercedes reference values
- 03Guided fault tracing through Xentry engineering decision trees
- 04Mechanical confirmation — smoke testing, pressure testing, actuator tests
- 05Written findings with a prioritized repair estimate
- 06Post-repair verification scan and readiness monitor reset
Common questions
Can I just get the code read for free somewhere?
You can, and it will give you a number. What it will not give you is the Mercedes-specific sub-code, the freeze-frame data, or the adaptation values that separate a $40 repair from a $2,000 one. We regularly see cars where a free code read led to hundreds of dollars in unnecessary parts.
Do you credit the diagnostic fee toward the repair?
Yes. If you have us perform the repair we diagnose, the diagnostic charge is applied to the job. Call us at the number above and we will confirm the fee for your specific model before you come in.
Let us take a look at it.
Call and describe what the car is doing. We will give you an honest assessment before any work begins.
