Differential & Driveshaft
A vibration at 60 mph that you feel through the floor rather than the wheel is almost always driveline, and almost always cheap to fix if you catch it early.
Signs you need this
- Vibration through the floor that builds with road speed
- Clunk on take-off or when lifting off the throttle
- Whine or howl from the rear that changes on and off throttle
- Oil weeping from the differential cover or pinion seal
How we approach it
The rubber flex discs at each end of a Mercedes driveshaft perish and crack, the centre support bearing collapses, and the result is a vibration and a clunk that owners often mistake for a transmission problem. We inspect the whole driveline as a unit, because replacing a flex disc against a dead centre bearing puts the vibration straight back. On the differential side we handle whine diagnosis, cover and pinion seal leaks, and fluid service on both standard and limited-slip units.
What the job includes
- 01Full driveline inspection with the car on a lift
- 02Front and rear flex disc (Giubo) replacement
- 03Driveshaft centre support bearing replacement
- 04Driveshaft balance check and universal joint inspection
- 05Differential pinion and cover seal replacement
- 06Differential fluid service with correct specification
Common questions
Is a cracked flex disc dangerous?
Eventually, yes. If one fails completely the driveshaft can drop, which damages the tunnel, the exhaust and occasionally the transmission. It is an inexpensive part and worth doing when the cracks appear.
Why does my differential whine only at certain speeds?
Gear whine peaks where the tooth mesh frequency matches a body resonance. It usually means the pinion bearing preload has changed — worth investigating before the gear set is damaged.
