What goes wrong
Mercedes-Benz vehicles use the ASSYST (Active Service System) or FSS (Flexible Service System) to monitor driving conditions and calculate service intervals. The system alternates between "A Service" (minor) and "B Service" (major) approximately every 10,000 miles or 12 months. Many Mercedes owners either go to the dealer and pay $350-$600+ for routine maintenance, or they go to a quick-lube chain that uses incorrect oil specifications, wrong filter types, and has no understanding of Mercedes service requirements. Neither is a good option. Mercedes engines require oil that meets specific MB specifications — MB 229.5, 229.51, or 229.52 depending on the engine — and using oil that does not meet these specifications can cause premature wear, sludge formation, and in some cases void warranty coverage. The service interval system also needs to be properly reset using diagnostic equipment — simply resetting the counter on the dashboard does not update the internal maintenance record stored in the vehicle computer. Deferred maintenance is the number one killer of Mercedes-Benz reliability. Skipped brake fluid changes lead to corroded ABS valve bodies. Neglected air filters choke airflow and reduce fuel economy. Forgotten spark plugs cause misfires and catalytic converter damage. Every skipped service compounds into exponentially more expensive repairs.
How we fix it
Beach Benz offers complete A Service and B Service maintenance packages that follow Mercedes-Benz factory recommendations. Our A Service includes a synthetic oil change with oil meeting the correct MB specification for your engine, a genuine Mercedes or OEM-equivalent oil filter, tire pressure check and adjustment, fluid level inspection, brake pad visual inspection, and a multi-point vehicle health check. Our B Service includes everything in the A Service plus cabin air filter replacement, engine air filter replacement (if due), brake fluid flush with DOT 4 Plus meeting MB spec 331.0, a comprehensive under-car inspection on the lift, and any additional items flagged by the ASSYST system for your mileage and driving conditions. We reset the service indicator using Star Diagnostic, which updates both the dashboard counter and the internal maintenance log — this is important for warranty documentation and resale value. Additional maintenance items we perform on a scheduled basis include transmission fluid and filter service (every 60,000 miles), spark plug replacement (every 30,000-60,000 miles depending on engine), coolant flush (every 5 years / 150,000 miles), drive belt replacement, and differential fluid service.

Common questions
What is the difference between A Service and B Service?
A Service is the minor service interval — primarily a synthetic oil and filter change with a multi-point inspection. B Service is the major interval — it includes everything in the A Service plus cabin air filter, engine air filter, brake fluid flush, and a more comprehensive inspection. The two services alternate, so your schedule would be A, B, A, B at approximately 10,000-mile intervals. Additional items like spark plugs, transmission fluid, and coolant are added at specific mileage thresholds.
Do I need to go to the Mercedes dealer for maintenance to keep my warranty?
No. Under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, you are not required to have maintenance performed at a franchised dealer to maintain your factory warranty. Any qualified independent shop that uses parts and fluids meeting Mercedes specifications can perform warranty-compliant maintenance. We use genuine Mercedes or OEM-equivalent parts and document every service with your vehicle's VIN. We provide detailed invoices that satisfy any warranty claim review.
How much does an oil change cost for a Mercedes?
Our A Service (oil change with inspection) starts at $189 for four-cylinder models and ranges up to $295 for V8 and AMG models due to increased oil capacity and filter cost. This includes the correct MB-specification synthetic oil, a genuine or OEM-equivalent oil filter, and a multi-point inspection. Mercedes dealers typically charge $350-$500+ for the same service.
What oil specification does my Mercedes need?
It depends on your engine. Most modern Mercedes gasoline engines (M271, M272, M273, M274, M276, M278) require oil meeting MB 229.51 (low-ash for vehicles with DPF) or MB 229.5. AMG models with the M156 6.2L V8 require MB 229.5 specifically. Some newer turbo engines (M264, M256) require MB 229.52. We use Mobil 1, Castrol Edge, or Liqui Moly products that carry the correct MB approval on the bottle — not just "compatible with" but actually approved and listed by Mercedes-Benz.
Can you reset my service light without doing the service?
We do not recommend this, and we generally decline to do it. The service indicator exists to protect your engine and maintain your vehicle's maintenance record. Simply resetting the counter without performing the service creates a false record in the vehicle computer, which can cause issues with warranty claims and reduces the vehicle's documented service history for resale. If you perform your own maintenance, we can reset the indicator if you provide proof of the work performed and the parts used.
