W460/W461
280GE / 300GD G-Wagen
Overview
The original G-Wagen was developed jointly with Steyr-Daimler-Puch as a military and utility vehicle, but its combination of rugged off-road capability and Mercedes-Benz engineering quality quickly earned it a devoted civilian following. The W460 and W461 feature three locking differentials, a ladder frame, and solid axles front and rear — true off-road hardware wrapped in a package that is surprisingly comfortable on-road. The diesel 300GD is particularly sought after for its reliability.

Beach Benz Experience
“The original G-Wagen is one of the toughest vehicles Mercedes-Benz has ever built, and we have been maintaining them for 35 years. The diesel models with the OM617 are essentially the same bulletproof engine found in the W123, mounted in a military-grade chassis — they are nearly impossible to kill with proper maintenance. We specialize in the transfer case and axle work that keeps these trucks performing off-road. Rust is the primary enemy, and we recommend annual undercarriage inspections with proactive rust treatment. If you find a clean W460 diesel, buy it — they are only going up in value.”
