Inspections & Advice

Pre-Purchase Inspection

Before you sign the papers on a used Mercedes-Benz, let us tell you exactly what you are buying. Our comprehensive pre-purchase inspection covers every system — mechanical, electrical, cosmetic — with a full Star Diagnostic scan and a detailed written report. Know the facts, not the seller's story.

What goes wrong

Buying a used Mercedes-Benz without a pre-purchase inspection is gambling with thousands of dollars. Sellers — whether private parties, independent dealers, or even franchised dealers — often do not disclose known issues or are genuinely unaware of developing problems. A Mercedes with a clean Carfax can still have a failing Airmatic compressor ($1,800), a slipping torque converter ($3,500), a biodegradable wiring harness chewed by rodents ($2,000+), or an M272 balance shaft on the verge of failure ($4,000-$6,000). These problems are invisible in a test drive and undetectable without factory diagnostic equipment. A pre-purchase inspection costs a fraction of what any of these repairs would cost if discovered after purchase. We see buyers every month who skipped the inspection and are now facing repair bills that exceed what they paid for the car. The older and more complex the Mercedes, the more critical the inspection becomes — an R230 SL with a tired ABC system or a W221 S-Class with a failing SAM can bankrupt an unprepared buyer.

How we fix it

Beach Benz performs one of the most thorough pre-purchase inspections available for Mercedes-Benz vehicles. Our inspection begins with a full Star Diagnostic scan of every control unit — we read all stored and pending fault codes, check adaptation values for signs of compensated wear (transmission clutch pack wear, Airmatic compressor run times, battery condition data), and verify that no modules have been recently cleared to hide faults. We then perform a comprehensive mechanical inspection: engine compression or leak-down test, transmission fluid condition, cooling system pressure test, brake measurements, suspension inspection with ride height verification, and a check of all fluid levels and conditions. We perform a 20-minute road test evaluating cold start behavior, transmission shift quality at all speeds, brake pedal feel, steering alignment, suspension noise, and climate control function. We inspect the underbody for accident damage, rust, and oil leaks. We check the interior for wear patterns consistent with the stated mileage. You receive a detailed written report with photos documenting every finding, along with an estimated repair cost for any issues discovered. This report gives you the information you need to negotiate, walk away, or buy with confidence.

Common questions

How long does a pre-purchase inspection take?

A thorough pre-purchase inspection takes approximately 2 to 3 hours. We do not rush this process — the goal is to find everything, not just the obvious items. We need the vehicle for a minimum of half a day to complete the diagnostic scan, mechanical inspection, road test, and report preparation. We can usually accommodate same-day or next-day appointments.

Can you inspect a car at the seller's location?

We perform all pre-purchase inspections at our shop in Huntington Beach. This gives us access to our full diagnostic equipment, lift, and tools. We recommend having the seller bring the vehicle to us or arranging to transport it. Many sellers are willing to meet at our shop — if a seller refuses to allow a pre-purchase inspection, that itself is valuable information.

What is the most common issue you find during pre-purchase inspections?

The single most common finding is recently cleared fault codes — someone has plugged in a scan tool and erased the codes before listing the vehicle. Our Star Diagnostic can detect this because certain adaptation values and readiness monitors do not reset when codes are cleared. Other extremely common findings include worn Airmatic components, deferred maintenance (overdue transmission fluid, neglected brake fluid), and underestimated accident damage that was repaired but not properly aligned.

Should I get a PPI even if the car has a clean Carfax?

Absolutely. Carfax only reports what has been reported — it misses unreported accidents, private repairs, deferred maintenance, and developing mechanical issues. A vehicle can have a perfect Carfax and still need $5,000 in repairs. A Carfax report tells you what happened in the past. Our pre-purchase inspection tells you what is happening right now and what is about to happen.

Do you inspect vehicles from out of state or at auction?

We inspect any Mercedes-Benz that can be brought to our shop. For out-of-state purchases, we recommend having the vehicle shipped to us before finalizing the sale, or arranging a contingency in the purchase agreement that allows the sale to be voided if the inspection reveals undisclosed issues. We do not attend auctions, but we can inspect a vehicle after an auction purchase if the sale terms allow for inspection.

Let us take a look at it.
