Belts, Pulleys & Tensioners
One belt drives the alternator, the water pump, the power steering and the air conditioning. When it goes, everything goes with it.
Signs you need this
- Squealing or chirping from the front of the engine
- Visible cracks, glazing or missing ribs on the belt
- Rattle or rumble that changes with engine speed
- Battery light with a belt that has shredded or jumped
How we approach it
A serpentine belt rarely fails on its own — it fails because a tensioner has lost its damping or an idler bearing has gone dry and started to squeal. We replace the belt with the tensioner and pulleys as a set, which costs a little more today and saves a tow later. Belt condition, alignment and pulley runout are checked at every service so you get warning long before the car leaves you on the 405.

Common questions
Should I replace the tensioner with the belt?
On anything over 80,000 miles, yes. A worn tensioner is what destroys belts, and doing them together costs far less than doing them a year apart.
How long does a serpentine belt last?
Usually 60,000 to 90,000 miles, less in the heat. We check it at every oil change and tell you when it is getting close.
