Mass Air Flow Sensor Failure (M112/M113)

The mass air flow (MAF) sensor measures the volume and density of air entering the engine and sends this data to the ECU for fuel injection calculations. On the M112 V6 and M113 V8 engines commonly found in late-1990s to mid-2000s Mercedes models, the hot-film MAF sensor element degrades over time, causing incorrect air mass readings. This leads to poor fuel mixture calculations, rough idle, and reduced performance.

Prevention

Avoid aftermarket oiled cotton air filters — the oil migrates to and contaminates the MAF sensor

Inspect the air intake ducting for cracks during every service — cracked plastic is common on older models

Use only OEM or Bosch/MANN replacement MAF sensors — cheap aftermarket sensors cause more problems

Can I clean the MAF sensor instead of replacing it?

Yes, cleaning is a reasonable first step. Use only a dedicated MAF sensor cleaner (CRC MAF Sensor Cleaner is the industry standard). Do not touch the sensor element with anything — no compressed air, no contact cleaners, no brushes. Spray the element from 6 inches away and let it air dry completely. If symptoms persist after cleaning, replacement is necessary.

Why should I avoid aftermarket MAF sensors for my Mercedes?

Mercedes ECUs are calibrated to the specific output curve of the Bosch OEM MAF sensor. Aftermarket MAF sensors often have slightly different output characteristics that cause the ECU to miscalculate fuel delivery. This results in ongoing drivability problems even with a "new" sensor. Always use an OEM Bosch unit for Mercedes applications.
