Catalytic Converter Failure (M272/M273)
The M272 3.5L V6 and M273 5.5L V8 engines use catalytic converters that are integral to the exhaust manifold (manifold-mounted cats). Over time, the catalyst substrate degrades from age, rich fuel conditions, and oil consumption, causing the converter to lose efficiency. California (CARB) emissions standards are stricter than federal standards, making this a particularly relevant issue for Southern California Mercedes owners who must pass smog inspections.

Common questions.
Will a failed catalytic converter cause my Mercedes to fail smog in California?
Yes. California smog testing measures tailpipe emissions and checks for emissions-related fault codes. A P0420 or P0430 code is an automatic smog test failure, and high NOx or HC readings from a failed catalyst will also fail the test. The converter must be repaired or replaced with a CARB-compliant unit to pass.
Can I use a non-CARB catalytic converter in California?
No. California law requires that replacement catalytic converters carry a CARB Executive Order (EO) number. Installing a non-CARB converter is illegal and will result in a smog test failure. Federal-only converters are legal in the other 49 states but not in California (or states that follow California emissions standards).
