Air Filter Housing Crack (Unmetered Air Leak)

The plastic air filter housing on many Mercedes models becomes brittle with age and heat exposure, developing cracks that allow unmetered air to enter the engine downstream of the MAF sensor. Because this air bypasses the MAF sensor, the ECU does not account for it in fuel calculations, resulting in a lean fuel mixture. This causes rough running, lean fault codes, and poor drivability. The fix is simple and inexpensive, but the crack can be difficult to spot during a casual inspection.

How we diagnose it.

    Read fault codes — lean codes (P0171/P0174) without a corresponding MAF code suggests an air leak downstream of the MAF

    Monitor short-term and long-term fuel trims — highly positive values (>10%) confirm a lean condition

  3. 03

    Visually inspect the air filter housing for cracks, especially along seams and mounting tab areas

    Use a smoke machine to pressurize the intake and find the air leak

  5. 05

    Spray carb cleaner around the intake path while monitoring idle RPM — a change in RPM indicates a leak at that location

Common questions.

How do I find the crack if I cannot see it?

A smoke machine is the most effective tool. It pressurizes the intake with visible smoke, and the smoke escapes from the crack, making it easy to identify. If you do not have a smoke machine, spraying carb cleaner around the housing while the engine idles can reveal the leak — if the idle changes (speeds up or smooths out) when you spray a certain area, the crack is there.

Can a cracked air filter housing damage my engine?

The lean condition from unmetered air will not directly damage the engine in most cases. However, running lean long-term can increase combustion temperatures, which can stress the catalytic converters and, in extreme cases, damage the exhaust valves. More importantly, a cracked housing allows unfiltered air and debris to enter the engine, which can damage the MAF sensor and cause accelerated wear on the cylinders.
