Understand the Vacuum System Layout

Obtain the vacuum diagram for your specific model from the factory workshop manual. The system branches from a central reservoir through check valves and T-connectors to individual actuators. Understanding this layout is essential before diagnosing any failure.

Check the Vacuum Source (Pump or Intake Manifold)
On diesel models, inspect the engine-driven vacuum pump mounted on the back of the alternator or on the cylinder head. Check for oil leaks around the pump and verify it produces at least 18-20 inches of mercury. On gasoline models, check vacuum at the intake manifold. A healthy gasoline engine should produce 18-22 inches Hg at idle. Low vacuum at the source means nothing downstream will work correctly.
