Inspect the Wheel Arches
The wheel arches are the number one rust location on virtually every classic Mercedes-Benz. Examine the inside lip and the outer edge of all four wheel arches. Rust typically starts from the inside (where mud and moisture collect) and works its way out. Run your fingers along the inside edge—if the metal feels rough, flaky, or thin, rust is present. On W123 and W126 models, the rear wheel arches are especially prone to perforation. Push gently on any suspect areas to check for structural weakness.

Check the Jack Points
The four jack points on the lower body sides are critical structural areas. They are also common rust traps because they have enclosed box sections that hold moisture. Place the car on a lift or use a creeper to examine each jack point from below. Look for bubbling paint, flaking metal, or outright perforation. Press the magnet against each jack point—if it does not stick firmly, body filler has been used to hide rust, which is a red flag for a deeper structural problem.

Examine the Battery Tray
The battery tray and surrounding area in the engine bay is extremely prone to corrosion from battery acid leaks and condensation. Remove the battery if possible and inspect the tray, the inner fender, and the frame rail below the battery. On W123 models, the battery tray commonly rusts through completely. Check for previous repairs (welded patches or filler) and assess the overall condition of the metal in this area.

Inspect the Trunk Floor
Open the trunk, remove the spare tire and all carpet/liners, and examine the trunk floor carefully. Look for rust around the spare tire well, along the seams where the floor meets the rear panel, and in the corners where moisture tends to accumulate. On sedans, check the area where the trunk drain channels are located—clogged drains cause water to pool and accelerate rust. On the R107 SL, inspect the area behind the seats in the storage compartment.

Check the Rocker Panels (Sills)
The rocker panels (sills) run along the bottom of the car between the front and rear wheel arches. They are structural members and also very common rust areas. Examine them from outside the car for bubbling paint or soft spots. Then inspect from underneath for perforation. Run the magnet along the entire length—smooth, firm attraction indicates solid metal; weak or inconsistent attraction suggests filler over rust. Push gently on any suspect areas with the awl to test metal thickness.

Examine Fender Edges and Behind Trim
Inspect the bottom edges of all four fenders where they meet the bumper and rocker panels. Rust commonly forms behind trim strips and badges where moisture gets trapped. If possible, carefully lift any rubber trim strips to look behind them. On W123 and W126 models, check the trailing edge of the front fenders where they meet the doors—this area collects road spray and rusts from the inside out. Look for rippling or bubbling in the paint, which indicates rust beginning underneath.

Inspect Behind the Bumpers
If the bumpers can be easily removed or pulled away slightly, inspect the body structure behind them. The front and rear apron panels are often hidden rust areas. On chrome bumper models, remove the bumper overriders if possible to check behind them. On impact bumper models (post-1974), moisture collects between the bumper mounting structure and the body panel, creating perfect rust conditions. Also check the bumper mounting bolts and brackets for structural rust.

Put the car on a lift or use ramps and a creeper to inspect the entire underside.
