Remove the Glove Box or Lower Dash Panel
Most climate control vacuum actuators are accessed from behind the glove box or underneath the dashboard on the passenger side. On the W126, remove the glove box by opening it fully and releasing the retaining clips or screws at the top. On the R107, remove the lower dash panel by unscrewing the trim screws along the bottom edge. On the W123, the glove box removes by opening it and pressing the side stops inward. Set all hardware aside in a labeled bag to ensure nothing is lost during reassembly.

Identify the Failed Actuator
With the glove box removed, you will see a cluster of vacuum actuators connected to the heater box and fresh air flaps. Each actuator controls a specific flap: defroster, center vent, foot well, fresh air recirculation, and temperature blend. Determine which actuator has failed based on the symptom—for example, if air only comes from the defroster vents, the center vent and foot well actuators may have failed. Use the MityVac to test each actuator in place: disconnect its vacuum line and apply vacuum. A good actuator will hold vacuum and move the flap; a failed one will not hold vacuum.

Photograph All Vacuum Line Connections
Before disconnecting anything, take multiple detailed photographs of all vacuum line connections, routing, and color coding from several angles. The climate control vacuum system is complex, with multiple lines routed to different actuators, and reassembling them incorrectly will cause the climate control to malfunction. Many lines are color-coded—note which color goes to which port. This documentation step is critical and will save hours of frustration during reassembly.

Disconnect Vacuum Lines from the Failed Actuator
Carefully pull the vacuum lines off the failed actuator's ports. On older cars, the rubber lines may be brittle and crack when removed. If the line breaks off at the port, you will need to replace that section with new silicone vacuum hose. Note which port each line connects to—most actuators have two ports (one for each direction of movement) and they are not interchangeable.

Remove the Mounting Screws and Extract the Actuator
Remove the screws or clips that hold the actuator to the heater box or dash framework. These are typically Phillips screws or 8mm hex bolts. The actuator may also be connected to the flap via a small rod or lever arm—disconnect this linkage, noting the exact connection point. Some actuators are in very tight spaces and require patience and flexible extensions to reach. Avoid forcing anything, as the surrounding plastic ductwork is fragile and expensive to replace.

Install the New Actuator and Reconnect Vacuum Lines
Mount the new actuator in the exact position of the old one, securing it with the original hardware. Reconnect the flap linkage to the same point as the original. Connect the vacuum lines according to your photographs, using new silicone vacuum hose where the old rubber has deteriorated. Ensure all connections are snug and fully seated on the ports. Secure loose hoses with zip ties to prevent them from falling off due to vibration.

Test All Climate Control Modes
Start the engine and cycle through all climate control modes: defrost, center vent, bi-level, and foot well. Verify that air flows from the correct vents in each mode. Also test the temperature blend by moving the temperature control from full cold to full hot and verifying that air temperature changes accordingly. Check the fresh air recirculation flap by pressing the recirculation button and listening for the flap to actuate.

Verify No Vacuum Leaks and Reassemble
With the engine running, listen carefully around all vacuum connections for hissing sounds that indicate leaks. Apply vacuum to any suspect connections with the MityVac to confirm they hold. Once satisfied that the system is operating correctly with no leaks, reinstall the glove box or lower dash panel. Operate the climate control through all modes one final time to confirm everything functions properly with the panels reinstalled.
