W126 Door Lock Vacuum Pump Failure
The W126 S-Class relies on a vacuum pump mounted in the trunk to power its central locking system. This pump generates the vacuum needed to actuate the lock mechanisms in all doors, the trunk, and the fuel filler flap. Over time, the pump diaphragm wears out, the motor brushes deteriorate, or internal valves fail, leaving the entire central locking system inoperative. Because the pump is a single point of failure, its failure disables all locks simultaneously.

Where is the vacuum pump located on a W126?
The vacuum door lock pump on the W126 is located in the trunk, typically on the right (passenger) side behind the trim panel. On some models it is mounted to the rear parcel shelf. Access requires removing the trunk side trim panel. The pump is a small cylindrical unit with a vacuum hose connection and an electrical connector.
Can I manually lock the doors if the vacuum pump fails?
Yes, all W126 doors can be locked and unlocked manually using the key in the driver and passenger door locks, and by pressing the interior lock pins down on each door. The trunk can also be locked and unlocked with the key. The only inconvenience is the loss of the one-touch central locking convenience feature.
Why does my vacuum pump run continuously?
A continuously running pump indicates that the system cannot build or maintain sufficient vacuum. This is usually caused by a leak somewhere in the system — a cracked vacuum line, a torn actuator diaphragm, or a failed check valve. The pump will run trying to compensate for the leak. Prolonged running will eventually burn out the pump motor, so the leak should be found and repaired promptly.
