Biodegradable Wiring Harness Deterioration

In an effort to meet environmental regulations, Mercedes-Benz and its wiring harness suppliers began using soy-based and other biodegradable materials for wire insulation. Unfortunately, this bio-based insulation attracts rodents, deteriorates prematurely with heat exposure, and becomes brittle with age, exposing copper conductors and causing a wide range of electrical faults.
