Rear Subframe Cracking (W204 C-Class)
The W204 C-Class (2008-2014) has a documented problem with the rear subframe developing cracks at the mounting points where it bolts to the body. The cracks are caused by stress concentration at the weld joints, exacerbated by road imperfections and the relatively stiff rear suspension geometry. If not caught early, the cracks can propagate through the subframe, compromising the structural integrity of the rear suspension attachment and creating a safety hazard.

Is the rear subframe cracking a safety concern?
Yes. The rear subframe is a structural component that anchors the rear suspension, differential, and in some cases the rear axle. If the subframe separates from the body, the rear suspension loses its mounting, which can cause loss of control. Any cracking found should be addressed urgently.
Did Mercedes issue a recall for this problem?
Mercedes issued a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) but not a formal safety recall in the United States. Some owners have received goodwill assistance for repairs. In certain international markets, Mercedes has been more proactive. If you discover this issue, documenting it and contacting Mercedes-Benz USA customer care is recommended.
Is this issue specific to the W204 or do other models have it?
The rear subframe cracking issue is most associated with the W204 C-Class. The W203 (prior generation) had some subframe concerns as well but less documented. The W205 (next generation) uses a revised rear subframe design. Other models with independent rear suspension (W211, W212) have not exhibited this issue to the same degree.
