R107 Vacuum Climate Control Pods
The R107 SL-Class uses vacuum-operated servo pods to control the position of the heater and air conditioning flaps inside the climate control housing. These pods contain rubber diaphragms that deteriorate over decades, losing their ability to hold vacuum and move the flaps. The result is a climate system stuck in one mode — often full heat — regardless of the temperature settings on the control panel.

Why is my R107 blowing hot air all the time?
The most common reason is failed vacuum pods in the climate control system. When the pods lose vacuum, the heater flaps default to the full-heat position. This is a fail-safe design to ensure the defroster always works. To restore cold air and proper temperature control, the failed pods need to be replaced and all vacuum lines checked.
Can I repair the vacuum pods instead of replacing them?
Some owners have successfully rebuilt vacuum pods by replacing the internal diaphragm with new rubber sheeting. However, this is a fiddly repair and the results are not always reliable. Given that replacement pods are available at reasonable cost, most specialists recommend replacement over repair for a lasting fix.
How do I access the vacuum pods behind the dashboard?
Accessing the climate control vacuum pods on an R107 requires partial dashboard disassembly. The center console, glove box, and under-dash panels need to be removed to reach the climate control housing. Some pods are accessible from the engine bay side of the firewall.
