K-Jetronic Warm-Up Regulator Failure
The warm-up regulator (also called the control pressure regulator) is a critical component of the Bosch K-Jetronic continuous injection system. It adjusts the control pressure applied to the fuel distributor plunger based on engine temperature, enriching the mixture during cold running and leaning it out as the engine warms up. When the warm-up regulator fails, the engine runs poorly during the warm-up phase, resulting in rough cold idle, stumbling, and excessive emissions.

Rough or erratic idle when the engine is cold that improves significantly as it warms up
Stumbling, hesitation, or surging during the warm-up period (first 3-5 minutes of running)
Rich running when cold — black smoke, fuel smell, and sooty exhaust during warm-up
Lean cold idle — engine idles too fast or too lean when cold, causing stumbling or stalling
Black smoke from the exhaust specifically during the cold-running phase
Engine takes longer than normal to reach smooth, stable idle after a cold start
Why this happens.
Internal bimetallic strip failure — the strip that senses engine temperature and adjusts the valve position cracks or loses calibration
Heater element burnout — the electric heater that accelerates the bimetallic strip warm-up fails, leaving the regulator stuck in the cold-enrichment position
Diaphragm deterioration — the internal fuel diaphragm develops leaks, causing incorrect control pressure
Fuel varnish buildup on internal components from long storage periods or deteriorated fuel

Keep it from happening.
Run the engine to full operating temperature regularly to prevent fuel varnish buildup in the regulator
Use fuel stabilizer if the vehicle will be stored for more than 30 days
Ensure the engine cooling system thermostat is functioning correctly — the regulator needs proper engine heat to operate
Include the warm-up regulator heater element in your annual electrical system inspection
Common questions.
What does the warm-up regulator actually do?
The warm-up regulator controls the "control pressure" in the K-Jetronic system, which determines how easily the air sensor plate can push the fuel distributor plunger down. When the engine is cold, the regulator reduces control pressure, allowing the plunger to move more easily and deliver more fuel (richer mixture). As the engine warms up, the regulator increases control pressure, reducing fuel delivery to the normal lean mixture. This is the CIS equivalent of the choke on a carbureted engine.
Can I test the warm-up regulator without special tools?
A basic test is to check the heater element resistance with an ohmmeter (should be approximately 20-30 ohms) and verify it receives voltage. However, properly diagnosing the warm-up regulator requires a CIS pressure gauge set to measure control pressure at various engine temperatures. This is specialized equipment that is essential for CIS diagnosis.
My engine runs fine when warm but poorly when cold — is it always the warm-up regulator?
Not always. While the warm-up regulator is the most common cause of poor cold running on CIS-equipped engines, other causes include a faulty cold-start valve (which provides extra fuel during cranking), a leaking auxiliary air valve (which provides extra air during warm-up), or incorrect ignition timing. A systematic CIS diagnosis should check all of these components.
