Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. 01

    Determine if your tires can be rotated

    Many Mercedes-Benz models come with staggered tire setups, meaning the rear tires are wider than the fronts. If your front and rear tires are different sizes (for example, 225/45R18 front and 255/40R18 rear), you CANNOT rotate front-to-rear. You can only swap left-to-right on the same axle IF the tires are not directional. Check the tire sidewall for a directional arrow -- directional tires can only be used on one side of the vehicle.

    For square setups (all four tires the same size) with non-directional tires, use the rearward-cross pattern for rear-wheel drive: rear tires move straight to the front, front tires cross to opposite rear positions. For 4MATIC (AWD), use the X-pattern: each tire moves to the diagonally opposite position. For directional tires, rotate straight front-to-rear only.

    With the vehicle on the ground, use the 17mm socket to loosen each lug bolt about a quarter turn on all four wheels. Do not remove them yet. Mercedes uses lug bolts (not lug nuts), meaning the bolt threads into the hub rather than onto a stud. This makes wheel alignment during installation trickier, as the wheel has no studs to hang on. Some models have a locating pin to help.

    Lift and support the vehicle safely

    Position the floor jack under the designated lift point (reinforced pinch weld or frame rail with the factory jack pad adapter). Lift one corner at a time and place a jack stand under the designated support point. Repeat for all four corners. Ensure the vehicle is stable on all four stands before removing any wheels. On vehicles with air suspension, activate "jack mode" or the transport mode to prevent the system from cycling.

    Remove wheels and rotate per pattern

    Remove the lug bolts from each wheel and carefully pull the wheel off the hub. Mark each tire (FL, FR, RL, RR) with chalk so you know the original position. Move each tire to its new position according to the rotation pattern determined in step 2. When mounting, align the wheel bolt holes with the hub, using the locating guide pin if present.

    Hand-tighten lug bolts in a star pattern

    Thread each lug bolt in by hand to prevent cross-threading. On a 5-bolt pattern, tighten in a star sequence (not circular) to ensure even clamping. Hand-tighten all bolts first, then snug them with the socket wrench. Apply a thin layer of anti-seize to the lug bolt threads if desired to prevent seizing (common in coastal areas like Huntington Beach).

    Lower and torque to specification

    Lower the vehicle off the jack stands. Using a torque wrench, tighten all lug bolts to the Mercedes specification of 110 ft-lbs (150 Nm) for most models in the same star pattern. AMG models with center-lock wheels have different specifications. Over-torquing can warp brake rotors; under-torquing can allow the wheel to work loose. Recheck torque after 50-100 miles of driving.

    Adjust tire pressures and reset TPMS

    After rotating, check and adjust all tire pressures to the specification on the door jamb placard. If the front and rear specs differ (common on some models), make sure each tire is now set for its new position. Reset the TPMS system following the TPMS reset procedure so the system recalibrates to the new tire positions.
