How to Check Brake Pad Thickness on a Mercedes-Benz

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. 01

    Visual inspection through the wheel spokes

    For a quick check without removing the wheel, position yourself at each wheel and look through the spokes with a flashlight. The brake caliper and rotor will be visible. The brake pad is the flat material sandwiched between the caliper body and the rotor disc. You should be able to see the pad material edge facing toward you.

    Assess the outboard pad thickness

    The pad you can see through the wheel is the outboard pad. Shine the flashlight at the pad edge and estimate the remaining friction material thickness. New Mercedes brake pads are typically 10-12mm thick. The minimum safe thickness is 3mm (approximately the thickness of two stacked pennies). If the pads are at or near 3mm, replacement is due.

    Check the electronic wear indicator status

    Mercedes-Benz vehicles have electronic brake pad wear sensors, typically on the front left and rear right wheels. These sensors are wires embedded in the pad material that trigger a dashboard warning when the pad wears to approximately 3mm. If your dashboard shows a brake pad warning, at least one axle has reached the wear limit. The sensor only tells you about the one wheel it is installed on, so always check all four corners.

    Inspect for uneven wear patterns

    While checking pad thickness, look for uneven wear. The inner pad (closest to the engine) should be similar in thickness to the outer pad. Significantly more wear on the inner pad suggests a seized caliper slide pin. Tapered wear (thinner on one end) indicates a caliper mounting issue. Uneven wear between left and right sides can point to a sticking caliper piston.

    Check the brake rotor condition

    While inspecting the pads, examine the rotor surface. Run your fingernail across the rotor face near the outer edge. A pronounced lip at the rotor edge indicates significant rotor wear. Deep grooves, scoring, or cracks require rotor replacement. Mercedes rotors have minimum thickness specifications stamped on the rotor hat -- if the rotor is worn below this dimension, it must be replaced.

    Inspect the other three wheels

    Repeat the inspection for all four wheels. Front brakes do approximately 70% of the braking work and typically wear 2-3 times faster than the rears. It is normal for front pads to be thinner than rear pads. However, both pads on the same axle (left and right) should be within 2mm of each other.

    For a thorough inspection, remove the wheel

    For the most accurate assessment, safely jack up the vehicle and remove the wheel. With the wheel off, you can measure both the inner and outer pads with a caliper, inspect the caliper bracket and slide pins for corrosion, check the rotor for runout and thickness, and inspect the brake hoses for cracks or swelling.

  • 01If the brake pad warning light is on, do not delay brake service. Driving on worn pads damages the rotors, turning a pad-only job into a significantly more expensive pad and rotor replacement.
  • 02Never jack up a vehicle on soft ground or a slope. Use a flat, solid surface and always support the vehicle on jack stands -- never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack.
  • 03Mercedes-Benz AMG models with compound brakes have special pad requirements. AMG brake pads are NOT interchangeable with standard Mercedes brake pads.
  • 04If you feel pulsation in the brake pedal or hear grinding, squealing, or scraping noises, have the brakes inspected immediately. These symptoms indicate the pads may be worn to metal.

Front brake pads on a Mercedes typically last 30,000-50,000 miles depending on driving habits, vehicle weight, and whether the vehicle has performance or standard brakes. Rear pads last 40,000-70,000 miles. City driving with frequent stops wears pads significantly faster than highway driving.

Do I need to replace rotors every time I replace pads?+

Not necessarily, but Mercedes rotors are relatively thin and are often at or near their minimum thickness by the time the pads need replacement. Measure the rotor thickness and compare to the minimum specification stamped on the rotor. If the rotor is within 1mm of the minimum, replace it. Mercedes generally recommends replacing rotors with pads for optimal braking performance.

Why does my Mercedes pull to one side when braking?+

Pulling under braking usually indicates uneven pad wear or a seized caliper on one side. One caliper may be sticking, causing one side to grip more than the other. This can also be caused by a collapsed brake hose that traps pressure. Have the brakes inspected to identify the affected side and component.
