Warm the Engine to Operating Temperature
Start the engine and allow it to idle until the coolant temperature gauge reaches the center position (80-85 degrees Celsius). Ignition timing must be set with the engine fully warmed because the vacuum advance and mechanical advance mechanisms behave differently at different temperatures. If the engine has been sitting, drive it for 10-15 minutes to ensure complete warm-up of the catalytic converter and all engine management sensors.

Connect the Timing Light and Tachometer
Clamp the inductive pickup of the timing light around the number one spark plug wire (front cylinder on inline-six engines, right front on V8 engines). Connect the timing light power leads to the battery. Connect the tachometer according to its instructions. On some models, disconnect and plug the vacuum advance hose at the distributor to set base timing without vacuum influence—consult your specific model's specifications.

Locate the Timing Marks
The timing marks on classic Mercedes engines are located on the front of the crankshaft pulley (harmonic balancer) and a pointer or scale on the timing cover. Using a 13mm wrench, loosen the bolt on the distributor hold-down clamp just enough that the distributor body can be rotated by hand with moderate effort. Do not remove the bolt entirely. Be careful not to bump or pull the distributor upward, as this can disengage the drive gear.

Rotate the Distributor to Set Timing to Specification
With the engine idling, aim the timing light at the timing marks. The strobe effect will make the timing mark appear stationary. Slowly rotate the distributor body to align the timing mark with the correct specification on the scale. Rotating the distributor in the direction opposite to rotor rotation advances the timing; rotating it in the direction of rotor rotation retards it. Make small adjustments and allow several seconds for the engine to stabilize between changes.

Take the car for a spirited road test. Accelerate firmly from 30 MPH in third gear (automatic) or a higher gear (manual) up a moderate grade. Listen carefully for pinging or knocking sounds, which indicate the timing is too far advanced. If detonation is present, retard the timing by 1-2 degrees and retest. The engine should accelerate smoothly without any knocking. Also verify that there is no hesitation or stumbling at low RPM, which could indicate the timing is too retarded.

This can crack pistons, damage bearings, and burn holes in head gaskets. The engine may also run hot and have a rough, harsh idle. If you hear any pinging under acceleration, retard the timing immediately.
What happens if the timing is too far retarded?+
Retarded timing causes sluggish acceleration, poor fuel economy, and higher exhaust temperatures. The engine may feel lazy and unresponsive, and in extreme cases, the exhaust manifold or catalytic converter can overheat. A retarded engine will also typically idle unevenly and may stall easily. However, retarded timing is generally less immediately damaging than advanced timing.

Erratic timing at idle is usually caused by a worn distributor.
