W123 Rust (Wheel Arches, Battery Tray)

The W123 is one of the most beloved classic Mercedes-Benz models, but after four decades, rust is the single greatest threat to these cars. Common rust areas include the rear wheel arches, the battery tray (which suffers from battery acid overflow), front fender bottoms, floor pans, jack points, and the area around the rear window on sedans. On estates (300TD), the tailgate lower edge and rear quarter panels are also common rust areas.

Can rust on a W123 be repaired permanently?

Yes, with proper technique. The key is to cut back to solid, rust-free metal, weld in new steel, and then treat the repair with rust-inhibiting primer, seam sealer, and undercoating. Patch repairs over existing rust will fail because corrosion continues underneath. The best repairs also address the original cause — clearing drain holes, adding cavity wax, and improving drainage.

Is a rusty W123 still worth buying?

It depends on the extent. Surface rust and minor bubbling in the usual areas is normal and repairable. However, structural rust in the subframe mounts, jack points, or extensive floor pan rot can make restoration uneconomical.
