Transmission Valve Body Wear (5G-Tronic & 7G-Tronic)
The valve body is the hydraulic brain of the automatic transmission, containing dozens of precisely machined passages, valves, and solenoids that direct transmission fluid to engage the correct clutch packs and bands for each gear. On the 5G-Tronic (722.6) and 7G-Tronic (722.9) transmissions, the valve body bore surfaces wear over time, causing internal fluid leaks that result in delayed, harsh, or slipping shifts. The 722.9 also uses an electrical conductor plate (TCU) mounted on the valve body that is prone to separate failure.

Harsh or jerky shifts, especially 2-3 and 3-4 upshifts
Delayed engagement when shifting from Park to Drive or Reverse
Transmission slipping — RPMs rise but the vehicle does not accelerate proportionally
Check engine light with P0700 (transmission malfunction) or specific shift solenoid codes
Transmission goes into failsafe/limp mode (stuck in 2nd gear)
Fluid leak from the transmission pan area (conductor plate seal on 722.9)

Common questions.
Is Mercedes transmission fluid really "lifetime"?
No. While Mercedes marketing materials have stated that the transmission fluid is a "lifetime fill," every independent specialist and experienced dealer technician knows that transmission fluid degrades over time. The fluid loses its friction-modifying properties, becomes contaminated with wear particles, and eventually causes accelerated wear. We recommend changing the fluid and filter every 40,000-60,000 miles for the longest transmission life.
What is the conductor plate on the 722.9?
The conductor plate is an electrical module mounted directly on the valve body inside the transmission. It contains the Transmission Control Unit (TCU), speed sensors, and electrical connections to all the shift solenoids. It is sealed with a rubber gasket that deteriorates over time, allowing transmission fluid to leak into the electrical connector. Conductor plate failure is one of the most common 722.9 issues and is often replaced at the same time as the valve body.
Can I just reset the transmission adaptation values to fix harsh shifts?
Resetting the adaptation values is a temporary band-aid, not a repair. The TCU will re-learn the same adaptations within a few hundred miles because the underlying mechanical wear is still present. If the adaptation values were very high before the reset, it confirms that the transmission has significant internal wear that needs to be addressed mechanically.
