SAM Module Water Damage (Signal Acquisition Module)
The SAM (Signal Acquisition Module) is the central relay and fuse box controller in a Mercedes-Benz. Most models have a front SAM (in the engine bay or behind the dashboard) and a rear SAM (in the trunk or under the rear seat). These modules control nearly every electrical function in the vehicle — lights, wipers, fans, windows, fuel pump, and more. Water intrusion from clogged drains, leaking windshields, or faulty trunk seals can damage the circuit boards, causing a cascade of bizarre and seemingly unrelated electrical failures.

Warning signs to watch for.
Multiple electrical functions fail simultaneously (lights, wipers, windows, etc.)
Random warning lights illuminated on the dashboard
Fuel pump does not activate — engine cranks but will not start
Headlights, taillights, or turn signals malfunction intermittently
Battery drains overnight due to a parasitic draw from the damaged SAM
Windshield wipers run on their own or will not turn off
Central locking fails or operates erratically
Cooling fan runs continuously even with the engine off
Why this happens.
Front SAM: water leaks through a clogged or disconnected cowl drain tube, pooling in the footwell area where the SAM is located
Rear SAM: water enters the trunk through deteriorated trunk lid seal, taillight gaskets, or clogged sunroof drains
Front SAM (W211/W219): the battery compartment is in the engine bay and rainwater can wick along the wiring into the SAM
Corroded connector pins at the SAM module create intermittent connections
Circuit board traces corrode from water contact, creating short circuits and open circuits

Keep it from happening.
Clear cowl drains at least twice a year — especially in fall when leaves clog them
Inspect trunk seal and taillight gaskets annually for deterioration
If you find water in the footwell or trunk, address the source immediately before it reaches the SAM
Keep sunroof drains clear by pouring a small amount of water into the sunroof channel and verifying it exits under the vehicle
Apply dielectric grease to the SAM connectors during any service that involves disconnecting them
Common questions.
How do I know if my SAM module has water damage?
The hallmark of SAM water damage is multiple unrelated electrical failures occurring simultaneously. If your headlights, wipers, and fuel pump all stop working at the same time, the SAM is likely the cause. Physical inspection will often reveal green corrosion on the module connector or visible water staining inside the module housing.
Can I use a SAM from another Mercedes?
Only if the donor module has the same Mercedes part number and software version. SAM modules are vehicle-specific and must be SCN coded (online programming through the Mercedes server) to your specific VIN after installation. Using a SAM with a different part number will result in incompatible software and additional electrical failures.
What causes water to get into the SAM module area?
The most common cause is clogged cowl drains (for the front SAM) and deteriorated trunk seals or clogged sunroof drains (for the rear SAM). Leaves and debris block the drain tubes, causing water to pool and eventually overflow into the passenger footwell or trunk where the SAM modules are mounted. A cracked windshield seal can also allow water to wick down behind the dashboard.
