Power Steering Pump Leak (Conventional & ABC)
Mercedes-Benz vehicles use either a conventional hydraulic power steering system or the more complex ABC (Active Body Control) system that combines power steering with active suspension. Both systems use a belt-driven hydraulic pump that can develop leaks from the shaft seal, high-pressure line fittings, or the reservoir. ABC system leaks are more critical because the pump also feeds the suspension struts — a leak affects both steering and ride quality.

Power steering fluid on the ground beneath the engine area
Whining or groaning noise when turning the steering wheel
Steering feels heavy or stiff, especially at low speed
Power steering fluid level drops repeatedly after topping off
ABC vehicles: "Visit Workshop" warning and suspension malfunction
Foamy or aerated fluid in the power steering reservoir
Why this happens.
Pump shaft seal wears from age and mileage, allowing fluid to weep past the pulley
High-pressure line O-rings and banjo bolt seals degrade from heat and pressure cycling
Reservoir cracks or the reservoir-to-pump hose deteriorates
ABC systems: the tandem pump handles higher pressures (up to 200+ bar), accelerating seal wear
Contaminated fluid from a failing steering rack circulates abrasive particles that damage the pump

ABC tandem pump replacement and system flush
Addresses the unique high-pressure requirements of the ABC system; includes fresh Pentosin CHF 11S fluid
ABC pumps are significantly more expensive than conventional; system flush is critical to prevent contamination of the new pump
Keep it from happening.
Change the power steering fluid every 40,000-50,000 miles (more critical for ABC systems)
Use only the specified fluid — Pentosin CHF 11S for most Mercedes (NEVER use generic ATF)
Inspect the pump, lines, and reservoir during every oil service
Do not hold the steering wheel at full lock for more than a few seconds — this overloads the pump
Address any steering noise immediately — noise indicates the pump is cavitating or starving for fluid
Common questions.
What is the difference between regular power steering and ABC?
Regular (conventional) power steering only assists steering effort. ABC (Active Body Control) is a combined system where the hydraulic pump feeds both the steering rack and four hydraulic suspension struts that actively control body roll, pitch, and ride height. ABC systems operate at much higher pressures (200+ bar vs 80-120 bar for conventional) and are more complex and expensive to service.
Can I use regular power steering fluid in my Mercedes?
No. Most Mercedes power steering systems require Pentosin CHF 11S synthetic hydraulic fluid. Using generic ATF or conventional power steering fluid will damage the seals and internal components. ABC systems are especially sensitive to incorrect fluid. Always verify the correct specification for your specific model.
