Classic Mercedes Head Gasket Failure (M110)
The M110 dual-overhead-cam inline-six engine features an aluminum cylinder head mated to a cast-iron block. This combination of dissimilar metals, combined with decades of thermal cycling, makes the head gasket a known wear item. When the gasket fails, coolant can leak into the combustion chambers, oil passages, or externally. Aluminum head warpage from overheating episodes compounds the problem and must be addressed during repair to prevent repeat failure.

Warning signs to watch for.
Gradual coolant loss with no visible external leak — coolant level drops over days or weeks
White sweet-smelling smoke from the exhaust, especially noticeable during warm-up or under load
Milky, emulsified substance on the oil filler cap or dipstick indicating coolant mixing with oil
Persistent or recurring engine overheating despite a properly functioning cooling system
Bubbles visible in the coolant expansion tank when the engine is running, indicating combustion gases entering the cooling system
Rough running or misfiring on one or more cylinders due to coolant fouling the spark plugs
Why this happens.
Age and thermal cycling — decades of heating and cooling cause the gasket material to fatigue and lose its sealing ability
Aluminum cylinder head warpage from overheating episodes, even brief ones, that distort the head surface beyond gasket sealing capability
Overheating damage from deferred cooling system maintenance — failed water pump, clogged radiator, stuck thermostat, or collapsed hoses
Deferred coolant maintenance allowing internal corrosion that attacks the gasket and mating surfaces
Dissimilar thermal expansion rates between the aluminum head and cast-iron block stressing the gasket during temperature changes
How we diagnose it.

Perform a cooling system pressure test — pressurize the system to 15 psi and monitor for pressure decay, which indicates a leak

Conduct a combustion gas test (block test) on the coolant expansion tank using a chemical reagent that changes color in the presence of exhaust gases

Check the engine oil for coolant contamination — milky appearance or abnormal oil level increase

Inspect spark plugs for signs of coolant fouling — a clean, steam-washed appearance on one or more plugs suggests coolant entry

Keep it from happening.
Maintain the cooling system rigorously — replace the thermostat, water pump, and coolant hoses at their recommended intervals
Flush and replace coolant every two years with the correct Mercedes-approved blue coolant at the proper concentration
Address any overheating immediately — do not continue driving an overheating M110 engine, as even brief overheating can warp the aluminum head
Monitor coolant level regularly and investigate any unexplained loss promptly before it leads to a severe overheat
Replace the radiator cap at recommended intervals to ensure the system maintains correct pressure
Common questions.
How do I know if my M110 head is warped?
Head warpage can only be accurately measured with the head removed and placed on a surface plate with a precision straightedge and feeler gauges. The M110 aluminum head maximum warpage specification is typically 0.05mm (0.002 inches). Any warpage beyond this requires machining (resurfacing) to restore a flat sealing surface. A machine shop can measure and resurface the head during a head gasket repair.
Can I use a head gasket sealer instead of replacing the gasket?
We strongly advise against it. Chemical head gasket sealers are a temporary fix at best and can clog the radiator, heater core, and coolant passages, creating additional expensive problems. The M110 head gasket requires a proper mechanical repair with head removal, inspection, resurfacing, and a new gasket. There are no reliable shortcuts for this repair.
What caused my M110 head gasket to fail?
The most common cause is simply age and thermal cycling over decades of use. The aluminum head and cast-iron block expand and contract at different rates with each heating and cooling cycle, gradually fatiguing the gasket material. Overheating episodes dramatically accelerate failure because the aluminum head warps more easily than the iron block. Deferred coolant maintenance and internal corrosion also contribute to gasket deterioration.
Is it worth rebuilding the head while it is off for a gasket job?
In most cases, yes. The labor to remove and reinstall the cylinder head is the majority of the cost. Once the head is off, the incremental cost to have a machine shop inspect and rebuild it (new valve guides, valve seats, valves, and springs) is relatively modest compared to doing the job twice. A rebuilt head will last another 150,000+ miles and gives you peace of mind that the entire top end is fresh.
