How to Use DISTRONIC (Adaptive Cruise Control) on a Mercedes-Benz

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. 01

    Locate the DISTRONIC controls

    The DISTRONIC controls are located on the left side of the steering wheel. There is a small stalk or set of buttons that includes: a speed limiter/cruise control toggle (usually a small lever on the side), an up/down rocker for speed adjustment, a following distance button (usually with a car-and-bars icon), and a resume/cancel button. Familiarize yourself with these controls while parked.

    Activate the system

    While driving on a highway or open road at a safe speed, press the cruise control stalk down (or press the DISTRONIC button, depending on your model). The instrument cluster will display a cruise control icon and the set speed. The system is now in "standby" mode, waiting for you to set a speed. Note that DISTRONIC typically requires a minimum speed of 20-25 mph to engage (some newer models work down to 0 mph in stop-and-go traffic).

    Set your desired speed

    Once at your desired cruising speed, push the stalk down (or press the SET button). The current speed becomes the set speed, displayed in the instrument cluster. Alternatively, you can use the rocker switch to adjust the set speed up or down in 1 mph (tap) or 5 mph (hold) increments. The set speed is shown as a number, and the system will maintain this speed when no vehicle is ahead.

    Adjust the following distance

    Press the following distance button (car-and-bars icon) to cycle through the distance settings. Most Mercedes models offer 4-5 distance levels, shown as bars in the display. More bars means a larger following gap. The shortest setting maintains about 1 second of following distance; the longest is about 3.5 seconds. For normal highway driving, a setting of 2-3 bars is comfortable and safe.

    Understand how the system manages traffic

    When DISTRONIC detects a slower vehicle ahead using the radar sensor in the grille, it automatically reduces your speed to maintain the set following distance. The deceleration is smooth and will use engine braking and light brake application. When the vehicle ahead moves out of your lane or speeds up, DISTRONIC gradually accelerates back to your set speed. The instrument cluster shows the detected vehicle with a visual indicator.

    Use the stop-and-go function (where equipped)

    On models with the full DISTRONIC Plus system, the vehicle can come to a complete stop behind traffic and resume automatically when traffic moves. If stopped for more than about 3 seconds, you will need to tap the accelerator or press the resume button to restart. This makes stop-and-go traffic significantly less fatiguing. The system displays a message when driver input is needed to resume.

    Cancel or deactivate DISTRONIC

    To temporarily cancel, press the cancel button on the stalk or tap the brake pedal. The set speed is remembered and can be resumed by pushing the stalk up. To fully deactivate, press the cruise control off button or push the stalk firmly upward. The system also cancels automatically if it detects the driver is not paying attention (no steering input for an extended period on newer models with Active Steering Assist).

    Know the system limitations

    DISTRONIC is a driver assistance system, NOT autonomous driving. It may not detect stationary objects, motorcycles in certain conditions, or vehicles cutting in suddenly. It works best on highways and well-marked roads. In heavy rain, snow, or fog, the radar sensor may become obscured and the system may deactivate with a warning. Always keep your hands on the wheel and stay alert.

  • 03The radar sensor is located behind the grille emblem. If this area is covered with mud, snow, ice, or debris, the system may malfunction or fail to detect vehicles. Clean the grille area if you receive a sensor warning.
  • 04Do not use DISTRONIC in construction zones, on winding mountain roads, or in conditions with poor visibility. The system is designed for highway and open-road use.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between cruise control and DISTRONIC?+

Standard cruise control maintains a set speed regardless of traffic ahead. DISTRONIC adds adaptive functionality: it uses a radar sensor to detect the vehicle ahead and automatically adjusts your speed to maintain a safe following distance. DISTRONIC Plus adds stop-and-go capability, and newer versions include Active Steering Assist for lane centering.

Can I use DISTRONIC in the rain?+

DISTRONIC works in light rain, but heavy rain can obscure the radar sensor. If the system cannot see clearly, it will display a warning and deactivate. This is a safety feature. Similarly, driving through large puddles can splash water onto the radar sensor, temporarily disabling the system. It will usually reactivate once the sensor dries.

Why does my DISTRONIC sometimes brake hard for no reason?+

Occasional false braking events ("phantom braking") can occur when the radar sensor detects an object it interprets as a vehicle -- such as an overhead road sign, bridge shadow, or guardrail on a curve. Mercedes has improved the system software over the years, and a software update may reduce these events. If it happens frequently, have the radar sensor alignment checked.
