Best Drives Near Huntington Beach in Your Mercedes

One of the great privileges of owning a Mercedes-Benz in Southern California is the sheer quality of roads within easy reach. Unlike most of the country, where a good driving road might be hours away, we have world-class routes right outside our door. After 35 years in Huntington Beach — and countless miles in every Mercedes model imaginable — these are our favorite drives.

Pacific Coast Highway: The Classic

Route: Huntington Beach north through Newport Coast, Laguna Beach, Dana Point, and beyond.

Distance: 30–60 miles depending on your turnaround point.

Best for: Grand touring, open-top driving, sunset cruises.

This is the drive that defines Southern California motoring. Leave the shop on Slater Ave, head south on Beach Blvd to PCH, and turn right. Within minutes you're tracing the coastline through some of the most beautiful scenery in the state. The road alternates between sweeping oceanside straights and tight turns through Laguna Canyon.

Mercedes recommendation: This is the ideal route for the SL, the E-Class Cabriolet, or any S-Class. It's about relaxation and scenery, not speed. Drop the top, set the suspension to comfort, and let the car do what it was designed to do. If you're in a classic R107 or R129 SL, this is where these cars come alive.

Tip: Go early on a weekday morning or late on a weekday afternoon to avoid the worst traffic. Weekend mornings before 9 AM are also excellent.

Ortega Highway (SR-74): The Mountain Pass

Route: San Juan Capistrano to Lake Elsinore via the Santa Ana Mountains.

Distance: 30 miles one way.

Best for: Dynamic driving, testing your Mercedes' handling.

Ortega Highway is the closest thing we have to a European mountain pass. It climbs from sea level to over 2,600 feet through a series of tight switchbacks, elevation changes, and off-camber turns. The road surface varies from excellent to challenging, and there's limited cell service in the middle section — plan accordingly.

Mercedes recommendation: This is AMG territory. The C63, E63, or any AMG model will feel at home here. The road rewards precise steering and strong brakes. If you're in a standard model, the E450 or C300 with sport suspension will put a smile on your face. Set DYNAMIC mode and enjoy.

Caution: Watch for cyclists, especially on weekends. The speed limit varies but the road demands attention regardless. And check your brake pads before you go — the descent is demanding.

Santiago Canyon Road: The Local Secret

Route: From Chapman Avenue in Orange through Silverado Canyon to Ortega Highway.

Distance: 25 miles.

Best for: A quick driving fix on a weekday.

Santiago Canyon Road is the route locals know about. It's a well-maintained two-lane road that follows Santiago Creek through the foothills. The turns are moderate — more sweeping than switchback — and the traffic is lighter than Ortega or Mulholland.

Mercedes recommendation: Perfect for any model. The GLE and GLC feel surprisingly composed here. The E-Class and C-Class are in their element. It's a great road to appreciate the everyday brilliance of Mercedes' suspension tuning.

Tip: Continue past Cook's Corner and connect to Ortega Highway for an extended loop that takes you back to the coast via San Juan Capistrano. The full loop is about 60 miles and takes 90 minutes with stops.

Angeles Crest Highway (SR-2): The Epic

Route: La Canada Flintridge through the San Gabriel Mountains to Wrightwood.

Distance: 66 miles one way.

Best for: All-day driving events, the ultimate SoCal driving road.

This is the crown jewel of Southern California driving roads. Angeles Crest climbs from the LA basin to over 7,000 feet, with hundreds of turns, dramatic elevation changes, and views that stretch to the Pacific on clear days. The road is wide, well-maintained, and varies from technical switchbacks to high-speed sweepers.

Mercedes recommendation: If you own an AMG, this is the road that justifies your purchase. The combination of elevation changes, long straights, and technical sections tests every aspect of the car. But even a base C-Class is rewarding here — the road is that good.

Important: This is a 90-minute drive from Huntington Beach before you even reach the start. Make it a Saturday morning event. Leave early, bring water, and check CalTrans for closures — the road is occasionally closed for snow, fire, or rockslides.

Mulholland Highway: The Icon

Route: From Pacific Coast Highway through the Santa Monica Mountains.

Distance: 25 miles.

Best for: Weekend morning drives, Cars & Coffee cruises.

Mulholland is the most famous driving road in Los Angeles, and for good reason. The section from PCH through the mountains is a masterclass in road design — tight turns, elevation changes, and stunning views of the ocean and the valley.

Mercedes recommendation: Any coupe or convertible shines here. The SL, AMG GT, C-Class Coupe, and even the CLA on a good day. It's a photographer's dream too — the rock wall at the famous "Snake" section is an iconic backdrop.
